Description: A neuroendocrine carcinoma that originates in the c-cells of the thyroid gland; about 10-20% of cases are familial. It occurs sporadically or is associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndromes. Germline and somatic mutations in RET and NTRK1 genes have been identified.
